   • Location: The Ellipse at Westfields is bordered by Lee Road (Route 661) on the west, Sully Road (Route 28) on the east, and Willard Road (Route 8451) on the south.
     The Long and Foster special exceptions that were submitted on behalf of Headquarters 2, LLC, have been scheduled for public hearing before the Planning Commission on November 18. The two separate applications are identified as SE 2010-SU-012 (Lot 2) and SE 2010-SU-013 (Lot 4). The two special exceptions propose a limited service and full service hotel on Lots 2 and 4 of the Long and Foster headquarters property. These hotels are being proposed pursuant to the recent amendment to the Comprehensive Plan for the Long and Foster headquarters property (S08-III-DS1).
     There have been no significant changes to the proposal presented as part of the APR process. The staff coordinator is Billy O'Donnell and it is expected that staff will recommend approval of the applications.
     Statements of justification:
     • SE 2010-SU-012 (Lot 2) Limited-service hotel of approximately 102,552 gross square feet
     • SE 2010-SU-013 (Lot 4) Full-service hotel of approximately 170,000 gross square feet

• Public to review Metro plans at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Herndon Senior Center, 873 Grace St
  • The public can view plans for redeveloping the area around a future Metro station in Herndon during a workshop next month.
  • The Herndon-Monroe station, set to open in 2016, is part of Metrorail's extension to Dulles International Airport.
  • The stop will be in the median of the Dulles Toll Road, adjacent to the park-and-ride garage on Sunrise Valley Drive. A pedestrian bridge will connect the station to the town, on the south side of Herndon Parkway.
  • The meeting will unveil the results of a workshop held in July at which residents shared opinions on redeveloping the area near the station over the next 20 years. Town officials are studying the north side, which consists of office buildings and hotels near Herndon Parkway. They will present two land-use options and the traffic impact of each.
  • Town officials anticipate the redevelopment to include a public plaza and a cluster of mixed-use office and residential buildings.
  • The workshop is part of a year-long study to update Herndon's land-use plan for the area. The Herndon Town Council is expected to adopt a plan in the spring.

• Successful "Electric Sunday" Program Expands to Include Fluorescent Light Recycling
  • The Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program, in partnership with Covanta Energy, Inc., is preparing to expand the "Electric Sundays" recycling program in 2010. These events will now offer residents an opportunity to recycle fluorescent light bulbs and tubes in addition to televisions, computers and peripheral electronic devices including keyboards, speakers, keyboards, printers, scanners, etc.
  • "More than eight thousand residents recycled over one million pounds of electronics at the ‘Electric Sunday’ events held at the I-66 Transfer Station during 2009," said Jeff Smithberger, Director of the Division of Solid Waste Collection and Recycling. "Thanks to the proven success of this program and the participation of the residents of Fairfax County, we are able to expand this program to include another ‘electric’ item -- fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, also known as compact fluorescent lights.
  • Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes contain a small amount of mercury. Given the high volume of fluorescent light usage in Fairfax County, properly recycling these bulbs and tubes can prevent mercury from entering our waste management system. Disposal of these materials at a household hazardous waste collection site allows for the recovery and recycling of the mercury, glass and aluminum contained in these bulbs and tubes.
