- Concerned about your real estate assessment?
- Administrative appeals can be filed with DTA if property owners believe their assessment is not equitable in comparison with similar properties, or if they believe their assessment exceeds fair market value. Residential assessment appeals can be initiated online through DTA’s website, www.fairfaxcounty.gov/taxes, or filed in writing. Appeal forms can be downloaded directly from DTA’s webpage.
- DTA encourages property owners to call 703-222-8234 if they have questions as early as possible. Administrative appeal applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2018, or filed online by midnight (EST) of May 1, 2018.
- Real Estate appeals can also be filed with the Board of Equalization (BOE) by June 1, 2018. Under State law, the BOE is separate from the DTA and consists of nine taxpayers appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The BOE conducts formal hearings and considers sworn testimony. BOE appeal forms are also available on the BOE website at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/boe or by calling the BOE office at 703-324-4891.

- Sully Land Use Spotlight:
- Recent Cases
- PA 2013-III-DS1 (Dulles Suburban Center Study)
On Wednesday, April 18, 2018 the Planning Commission heard PA 2013-III-DS1. This item is scheduled for a follow-on decision only hearing on Thursday, April 26, 2018. The plan amendment was a large scale, planning study to update the Dulles Suburban Center elements of the Comprehensive Plan. The study was submission-driven with the public able to propose optional uses for the various Land Units subject to the study (for a list of the original submissions and original submission details click here). Editorial changes were also incorporated into the study to clean-up and modify the area-wide plan text. Both the nominations and editorial changes were extensively reviewed over the course of several meetings (from March 2016 to February 2018) by an advisory group consisting of Sully District residents and community members (click here to access the meeting records and material). The staff report for the study is available here.
- PCA 82-S-032-02 (Penrose Place)
On Thursday, April 19, 2018 the Planning Commission heard and voted to recommend approval of PCA 82-S-032-02. The application enables the construction of an additional office complex on Penrose Place through the modification of pre-existing proffers on the site. Staff had recommended approval of the application. For more information and details on the case, click here.
When this case was heard by the Sully District Council at the joint Sully Land Use and Transportation Committee meeting in April 2018, this was the outcome:
Recommendation: The SDC has no objection to the approval of the Proffered Condition Amendment.
- The Planning Commission will meet on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. There is one Sully District case on the agenda. More information is below.
- RZ/FDP 2017-MD-027 (Horsepen Run, LLC)
This combined application would rezone the subject area (65.89 acres) from the R-1 to PDH-5 zoning district. It would also enable the construction of 228 single-family attached and 100 multifamily, stacked dwelling units on the southern portion of the property outside of the Environmental Quality Corridor/Resource Protection Area. 35 acres of the site would be transferred to the Fairfax County Park Authority to a) protect the corridor and resource protection area and b) to permit recreational use on fields to be constructed by the applicant. Additionally, the applicant will be constructing the extension of Sunrise Valley Drive from Park Center Road up to the intersection with Frying Pan Road. For more information on the application, please review the staff report here.
When this case was heard by the Sully District Council at the joint Sully Land Use and Transportation Committee meeting in April 2018, this was the outcome:
- Recommendation: The SDC has reaffirmed that it had no objection to the approval of the Middleton Farm Rezonimg, but identified two concerns:
- The ability of drivers going north on the North/South Connector to make a u-turn so as to get to the new park fields parking lots
- There needs to be a plan to facilitate the improvement of Frying Pan Road from its intersection with Sunrise Valley Drive to its intersection of Centreville Road
- Active Violence in the Workplace Preparedness Workshop

- Two Programs Can Help You Save Money and Protect Our Environment
- Get Up to Five Free LED Lightbulbs at Six Libraries in April and May — These LEDs use 85 percent less energy than an old incandescent bulb and 33 percent less energy than a CFL. When you come to get your free LED, if you bring in up to four incandescent or compact fluorescent lightbulbs, we’ll exchange them for LEDs that offer a warm white light equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb. “It’s a small change that makes a big impact for residents and the environment,” says Jessica Lavender, Energy Action Fairfax program manager. Find out dates and locations at NewsCenter.
- Limited-Time Discounts on Solar Panels for Your Home or Business — Slash your electricity bill by 60 percent or more by going solar! From April 2 through May 31, discounted solar panels are available through Solarize Fairfax County. We are partnering with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and the nonprofit Local Energy Alliance Program to offer this program for one-time, low prices with companies chosen through competitive bids. Get more information and learn how to sign up at NewsCenter.
